What is Winnsboro Main Street?

Winnsboro is one of a select group of Louisiana towns to be designated an official Louisiana Main Street Community, meaning it cherishes its historic downtown district and encourages its revitalization on a constant basis.

Working with an active Historic Preservation Commission and Board of Directors, the community-driven Main Street initiative works to improve economic management, strengthen public participation and make downtown a fun place to be.

In addition to its more visible projects as outlined on our project page, Main Street also promotes and takes an active role in the Catfish Festival, Princess Theatre, Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Commission activities.

Although the Main Street philosophy is designed to have a positive effect community-wide, the merchants whose businesses are in the designated historic district enjoy special grant opportunities and tax advantages.  Winnsboro became a part of the state program in 1988 and enjoys its status as a Veteran Main Street.

The Louisiana Main Street program is operated out of the Division of Historic Preservation in the Office of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in Baton Rouge.
